If you have a daughter about to go off to college, or if she is already away at college, it may be causing you sleepless nights. With all of the sad and scary stories we hear on television about acts of violence committed against women, especially college-aged girls, you may be worried about your daughter's safety. If you are reading this, sometimes you are the girl away at college, and you realize how easy it is to get victimized while you are minding your own business or just out having fun.
Whether the person in question, and let's assume it's a college girl, is living in an apartment, a dorm room, or a bedroom in a larger house, they NEED a door brace. This is an item that usually adjusts to various lengths. It wedges between the floor, and just under the door knob. Even if someone on the outside were able to unlock the door, the door brace would prevent them from pushing the door open. It can also be put on the floor or in the track of a sliding glass door, which would prevent the door from being opened, by blocking the area where the door slides on the track.
College girls also NEED an emergency electronic whistle or personal alarm (preferably battery-operated). These are devices which make a very loud noise, but with no need to have the lung capacity to blow on a mouthpiece. Most electronic whistles or personal alerts are around 120 or 130 decibels, and can be heard from quite a distance. They would attract attention to the person sounding the alarm, and if a gal got attacked or bothered by a stranger, or even someone familiar, they can press the button and get some help in the matter. Of course, there might be a situation where there is nobody nearby, which leads us to the third requirement.
Girls in college really need to have a pepper spray. Whether it is disguised as a lip stick, is on a key chain, or even if it is disguised in the form of a ring, pepper spray is a must-have for Pepper Sprays are a very effective way for an ordinary person to carry around some protection, and more importantly, some peace of mind. These days you can never be too sure, and a pepper spray will give the ability to stop an attacker "dead in his tracks." Once sprayed in the face and most sprays will shoot a stream at least 6 feet, the guy will have difficulty breathing, and his eyes will be burning. While coughing and choking, and rubbing his face, the thought of continuing the attack will suddenly be forgotten as the extreme discomfort will now be the new priority, as the gal gets away and gets to safety. So, there you have it, the three things that a college girl, or guy, really needs to have, to help protect and defend them themselves.
